AGING IN PLACE & UNIVERSAL DESIGN

How would you modify your home to make it more comfortable? To age-in-place, you will probably need to modify your house as you mature to increase access and maneuverability. Oftentimes, these changes are more cost effective than moving into an assisted living apartment and, more importantly, allow you to live in familiar surroundings.  Modifications range from the installation of bath and shower grab bars, adjustment of counter top heights, creation of multifunctional first floor master suites, making doorways larger, adding enhanced lighting and even the installation of private elevators and chairlifts. You can rely on one of our Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) to guide you through the necessary home modifications, common remodeling projects and solutions to common barriers. Universal Design is an approach to design that draws from both science and spirit. It is based on human factors and, along with quantitative information, places equal value on the aesthetics of a space or product. Universal design responds to our growing appreciation and respect for diversity in the spaces we design, and in the stature, age, abilities and culture of the people for whom we design. Universal design in not a “one size fits all”, but builds on anthropometry and ergonomics, as well as, human factors that help guide design of spaces.
